SCHOOL VIOLENCE
Are you safe at school?
Lately in the news there have been numerous school violence reports. Reading this in the newspaper is so scary to think about, but to actually see videos of this violence is seriously heart-wrenching. News like this really makes me realize that school is not guaranteed to be a safe environment. The thing is, schools should be as safe as possible, and if violence is going on in schools is it really safe to say that schools are doing their best to make these environments safe? I think not. I feel that we shouldn't have to hear this kind of stuff in the news and that we should feel as if we are safe in school. Then, I got to thinking... maybe that's the problem...maybe we feel as if school is a safe place and we get comfortable with that thought, forcing us to assume that we are protected from all danger at school. I think that this type of news has been a reality check- a real slap in the face. Now that many are realizing this I have seen many different responses.
A video released on The Real Daytime's YouTube channel allows us to hear the hosts opinion on a school violence report of a 12 year old being body slammed. Click here to watch the video. After watching the five minute video, I would have to agree with what Tamera Mowry (the host second to the left) had to say. She had said, "We have to do something about this. We should not just sit here and watch something like this [a student being body slammed] and talk about something like this, we have to start changing and doing something about this." When Mowry said this, I started to think of ways that we could do something about school violence and put it to end. In fact Loni Love- the host in the middle- made a good point that could actually be used to help get rid of school violence. Love mentioned that students need to be talked to about school violence so that they are aware of it and can be more cautious. For example, Mowry mentioned that when she went to school she was taught how to react if there were to be a drive by shooting and how to be defensive; which is a great way for schools and communities to avoid these acts of school violence in the future. In addition, Love said that it is important for students and staff to be trained on how to handle different school violence situations.
Although, there are many things needed to be done to avoid school violence, there are many people who are available in schools to help stop it. For example, guidance counselors are a great way to help students deal with bullying; which happens to be cause for many school violence situations. Guidance counselors really provide students with great advice which can help them a lot, especially when going through tough struggles. There are hall monitors at my school, and even they can help to stop any bullying they might see outside of the classroom.
Unfortunately, even with these people to help stop bullying which often leads to violence, school violence is still a reoccurring issue.
A new service I think could my school could provide to better help students being bullied in and out of school could be a messaging service to get in contact with a school guidance counselor and get advice. I think this would be effective because I find that often students are afraid to speak with counselors in fear of face-to-face conversation about personal problems. Therefore, this messaging service would allow students to text their guidance counselor in and out of school without the awkward meeting.
